![]() That hygienist popped into the insecure recesses of my mind. My wife and I moved to Denver, and I took a job at this magazine where-wait for it-I now work in an office and am out meeting people. ![]() As someone who thinks of himself as more substantive than vain, I never really cared-until I got the South Beach hard sell.įast-forward a few years. When I smile for a photo, they almost look like they’re not there. My teeth are straight they’re just a bit…gray. “Most days I sit in front of my computer, in my home office, and don’t see a single person besides my wife.” That ended the conversation. On my first visit, the hygienist noted that I might want to have my teeth whitened: “If you’re in an office and out meeting people for work,” she said, “you really might want to think about it.” “I’m a freelance writer,” I countered. When my wife and I moved to Miami Beach years ago, we expected an added emphasis on appearance-but I never thought that superficiality would extend to my dentist. Teeth Whitening: Bright Whites One man’s adventures in cosmetic teeth bleaching. Now when I smile I don’t focus on a perceived flaw I’ve got all the confidence that should come with a genuine grin. The trays can be a nuisance to take in and out (having to run to the bathroom, for example, while your friends are being seated at a restaurant), but they’re working. I imagined everyone was doing a double take when I smiled, wondering what was on my teeth-and a few people did ask.Ī few weeks in, though, I barely noticed them. For the first few weeks I was incredibly insecure. ![]() I have to change out the trays every two weeks for about 11 months. Marketed as “clear braces,” Invisalign uses retainers (“trays”) that you wear all the time, except when eating, that very slowly move your teeth into the right place. And I was embarrassed to admit that I cared about something as superficial as having a “perfect” smile, something that would be made painfully obvious with metal brackets on my teeth. I knew I didn’t want braces-been there, done that. I’m not a particularly self-conscious person-most people who know me well will say I’m not lacking in confidence-but the insecurity kept nagging at me. Flossing at night, looking at photos of myself, on a date…my teeth were all I could think about. Most of my friends barely even noticed-but I did. And then a few of my front teeth shifted. ![]() All I could think was, Does he notice my crooked teeth? I’d passed the awkward braces phase in eighth grade, but my jaw shifted as I grew, and halfway through college one of my permanent retainers (a small wire behind my front teeth) came loose. As I burst into laughter, it wasn’t a stray piece of lettuce making an unwelcome appearance that worried me. The date was going well- the food was tasty, the small talk was flowing, the chemistry was there. Invisalign: Grin and Bare It Invisalign is setting my teeth-and my confidence-straight. Of course there are many fine dentists who are not included in this list, and a dentist’s inclusion is based on the subjective judgments of fellow dentists. Once responses were compiled, dentists were checked against state dental boards for disciplinary actions to make sure they have an active license and are in good standing. (Dentists could also nominate themselves or others who may not be on the ADA list.) Respondents were asked to consider experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of new techniques and technologies, and results. To compile this list, topDentists asked dentists and specialists a personal question: “If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you refer him or her to?” The nomination pool consisted of dentists listed online with the American Dental Association. English was the third most commonly reported home language (124,900 students), which may reflect students who live in multilingual households or students adopted from other countries who were raised speaking another language but currently live in households where English is spoken. Arabic was the second most commonly reported home language (128,600 students). Spanish was the most commonly reported home language of EL public school students in fall 2020 (3.7 million students), representing 75.5 percent of all ELs and 7.8 percent of all public school students. Specifically, from fall 2019 to fall 2020, the percentage of EL kindergarteners declined by 2.1 percentage points (15.0 to 12.9 percent), compared with changes of half of a percentage point or less in every other grade. The difference was largest in kindergarten. However, the percentage of ELs was lower in fall 2020 than in fall 2019 in kindergarten and grades 1, 2, 5, and 9. 3įor the majority of grade levels, the percentage of public school students who were ELs was higher in fall 2020 than just before the pandemic in fall 2019. This is consistent with the expected pattern if students, who are identified as ELs in early grades, tend to obtain English language proficiency by the time they reach the upper grades. For example, 12.9 percent of kindergarteners were ELs, compared with 9.9 percent of 6th-graders, 8.1 percent of 8th-graders, and 5.6 percent of 12th-graders. In general, a higher percentage of public school students in lower grades than of those in upper grades were ELs in fall 2020. ![]() 13.7 percent of total public school enrollment in cities. In fall 2020, the percentage of students who were ELs was higher for school districts in more urbanized locales than for those in less urbanized locales. However, this upward trend was disrupted between fall 2019 and fall 2020-during the first school year of the coronavirus pandemic-when EL enrollment fell from 5.1 to 5.0 million students (from 10.4 to 10.3 percent of public school enrollment). The percentage of public school students in the United States who were ELs increased overall between fall 2010 (9.2 percent, or 4.5 million students) and fall 2020 (10.3 percent, or 5.0 million students). Comparisons over time should be interpreted with caution due to this change in the data reported. For example, in the 2020–21 school year, 98 percent of identified ELs were served by EL programs. However, the proportion of ELs who participate in EL programs is large. Starting with fall 2015, data include all currently identified ELs, regardless of program participation. For fall 2014 and earlier years, EL data include only those ELs who participated in EL programs. Note also that data on ELs enrolled in public schools have changed over time. Data on ELs include students with a current EL identification, but not students who were formerly identified as ELs and no longer are. This Fast Fact looks at the number and percentage of ELs in kindergarten and higher grades over time. The NKS is administered by Disability Rights UK. In the UK, access to disabled toilets is most often controlled by a RADAR key as part of the National Key Scheme (NKS). Such systems also enable operators to maintain a higher standard of hygiene in disabled toilets – something which is often needed for those with additional needs. Designed so that eligible people only have to carry one opener to access toilets and bathrooms designed to meet their needs, universal keys are widely used and available across Europe and in the UK. That’s why universal disabled toilet key schemes were introduced. The situation can be compounded if people without a disability regularly use the toilets meaning they are not easily accessible for those who really need them. It can even be time-consuming at perhaps the worst possible moment should staff not be immediately at hand or able to find the key. Having to ask an attendant for a toilet key is inconvenient. ![]() ![]() This realization crystallized an idea that had been slowly taking shape in Howie’s mind for years. That year proved to be an invaluable learning opportunity: While at Salesforce, Howie observed that many of the most useful software applications are nothing more than a relational database with an interface and some customizations layered on top. In 2010, Salesforce acquired Liu’s first company, and he then worked at Salesforce as a product manager for a year before leaving to start Airtable. ![]() Like many great ideas, the vision behind Airtable formed gradually. Howie joined me on the latest episode of the BUILD Podcast to share his vision for a product that he believes will ultimately democratize the ability to build software. “And we’re creating this application platform for teams within any company to build their own useful business process using an end user interface that feels like a spreadsheet, but is actually powered by a relational database and all of these other powerful pieces that we give you to build a useful, tailor-made application.” “What we’re really doing is creating this new layer of data-based workflows,” said Howie. But as founder and CEO Howie Liu explains, the platform’s familiar end user interface actually belies a transformational application powered by a flexible, relational database.Ībove: A screenshot from Airtable’s homepage They’re not entirely wrong Airtable looks like a spreadsheet and behaves like a spreadsheet. Many people-even those familiar with the platform-think of Airtable as a spreadsheeting tool. Howie Liu, Andrew Ofstad and Emmett Nicholas founded Airtable in 2012 on the belief that people can solve their unique problems by creating their own unique software.

Sustained drought in Utah has more recently strained Salt Lake City's water security and caused the Great Salt Lake level to drop to record low levels, and has impacted the local and state economy. Salt Lake City and the surrounding area are also the location of several institutions of higher education including the state's flagship research school, the University of Utah. It is the industrial banking center of the United States. It is home to a significant LGBT community and hosts the annual Utah Pride Festival. It is known for its politically liberal culture, which stands in contrast with the rest of the state's highly conservative leanings. It hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics and is a candidate city for the 2030 Winter Olympics. Salt Lake City has developed a strong tourist industry based primarily on skiing, outdoor recreation, and religious tourism. Two major cross-country freeways, I-15 and I-80, now intersect in the city. It was traversed by the Lincoln Highway, the first transcontinental highway, in 1913. Immigration of international members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), mining booms, and the construction of the first transcontinental railroad initially brought economic growth, and the city was nicknamed "The Crossroads of the West". In 1868, the word "Great" was dropped from the city's name. Owing to its proximity to the Great Salt Lake, the city was originally named Great Salt Lake City. Salt Lake City's street grid system is based on a standard compass grid plan, with the southeast corner of Temple Square (the area containing the Salt Lake Temple in downtown Salt Lake City) serving as the origin of the Salt Lake meridian. It is also the central core of the larger of only two major urban areas located within the Great Basin (the other being Reno, Nevada). Salt Lake City is further situated within a larger metropolis known as the Salt Lake City–Ogden–Provo Combined Statistical Area, a corridor of contiguous urban and suburban development stretched along a 120-mile (190 km) segment of the Wasatch Front, comprising a population of 2,746,164 (as of 2021 estimates), making it the 22nd largest in the nation.
